SIOUX CITY, IA - Republican Bob Vander Plaats is questioning the recent action by Governor Tom Vilsack to allow automatic restoration of voting rights for convicted Felons.

“If we are going to realize the vision of an improved Iowa, then we must stay focused and weigh every decision against the impact it will have on the people of Iowa,” said Vander Plaats. “In addition to taking the focus away from the key issues important to Iowa’s future, allowing Felons automatic voting rights simply does not reflect the moral character of Iowa.”

Vander Plaats notes, “Under the current system, felons must serve their sentence and make applicable restitution. Then they may petition the Governor and Secretary of State to restore voting rights.” It is a reasonable process that our legislature has put in place.

“Iowans support holding criminals accountable for the choices that they have made. As Governor, I will hold criminals accountable.” Vander Plaats added.
