During the past two weeks, I've had the privilege of visiting many of Iowas counties, from Dubuque to Des Moines, Carroll to Buchanan. Whatever the county, its citizens have consistently expressed their frustration with the status-quo. Each time I am confronted with such comments, I am reminded of the phrase, Keep doing what you've always done, and you'll keep getting what you've always got.
As a high school teacher and principal, CEO in a human services organization, and a business owner and leader, I have learned that true success, in any venue, requires innovative thinking. For Iowa to become competitive with its neighboring states we must employ fresh ideas and make bold decisions.
We must tap into the expertise of business leaders across our state in order to offer real, lasting solutions to the issues facing our ailing economy. Government money is not enough.
We must tap into the expertise of our best teachers and administrators in order to restore our education system to a place of excellence. Government money is not enough.
And we must tap into the expertise of healthcare providers and insurance leaders in order to provide avenues to fair and accessible healthcare. Government money is not enough.
We need constructive solutions, not more government bureaucracy.
I believe that Iowans are intelligent, hard-working individuals who deserve more than the status-quo. Employing innovative thinking to establish attainable goals will be imperative to the success of our state.
