A Note From: Hans Vander Plaats, "Athlete of the Week"

Hans Vander PlaatsI have many people to thank for my success in basketball. My dad and I have played the game together for as long as I can remember. He has coached most of my teams over the years and he still gives me technical and mental advice on my game. I have had the opportunity to play with a great team at Hinton and could never have achieved my individual goals without them. Two other people that have affected my game are my little brother, Lucas, who is severely disabled and my friend’s brother, Archie, who is paralyzed. Their names are written in my shoes to remind me how privileged I am to have the ability to play the game.

Through basketball, my dad has taught me that family should always come first. Before making the decision to run for governor again, he promised me that he would not miss any of my senior-year games. I know that it’s not always an easy promise to keep. He has missed opportunities to campaign because of it, but it means a lot to me to see, and hear him in the stands.

Bob and Family

Vander Plaats FamilyThe passion Bob has for his children is inspiring; each one has taught him new truths about life and love. With the birth of their third child, Lucas, Bob and Darla were faced with the sudden challenge of raising a child with a severe brain disorder. Their family has embraced this challenge as an opportunity to learn valuable lessons through adversity. When Darla became unexpectedly pregnant with their fourth child, the option of terminating the pregnancy was presented by the medical community. After all, would they really want to risk the birth of another Lucas? Believing that God creates ALL life, Bob and Darla never considered abortion to be an option. They were adamant that this addition to their family would be cared for and loved…regardless of the physical outcome.

Plymouth County Fundraiser Part 1 - Akron

Plymouth CountyA big “thank you” to Dan and Lisa Wells for hosting a fantastic event at their new HOLE N’THE WALL Hunt Club and Lodge in Akron, Iowa. I was so blessed by the warm reception that Darla and I received from those in attendance. It is always great to visit with supporters, and being in our home county made it even sweeter. The number of folks that came out for the event is representative of the momentum that our campaign is experiencing. Please take the time to enjoy each of the attached video clips.
